Ketoconazole (Nizoral) kills fungi and yeasts by interfering with their cell membranes. It works by stopping the fungi from producing a substance called ergosterol, which is an essential component of fungal cell membranes.
Ketoconazole (Nizoral) is used to treat:
• fungal infections of the skin, hair and mucous membrane that cannot be treated by applying a medicine directly to the infected area.
• persistent fungal infections of the vagina
• fungal infections of the mouth, throat and stomach, intestines or other internal organs.
